Home to La Ermita, the cool Andalucían town of Mijas sits just off the celebrated Costa del Sol coast, under the belly of the Sierra Nevada mountains. This fine, year-round destination which is part of the Macdonald chain of resorts has a stunning hillside setting with great views of the mountains and the coastal plain from its balconied rooms. Despite the seemingly remote setting, it is just 30 minutes transfer from Malaga Airport--one of Spain's busiest airports--and is reasonably close to the beaches of Fuengirola.

La Ermita has a lovely disposition, with a large terraced pool area being the focal point and offering exquisite views. One-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, known as Dali, look out over the pool and beyond. The units are open plan, with the three-bedroom timeshare apartments offering separate living room areas, while all have fitted kitchen and come with Wi-Fi internet. For upmarket, the two-bed superior apartments known as Goya & Picasso are a big hit.

There are two swimming pools on the deck, along with an indoor, heated pool (open in winter), a sauna and a steam room. It also features a fully-equipped gym, a spa suite and a café-bar, while a round of golf can be enjoyed at the nearby MacDonald la Ermita. The facilities of the 'white village' of Mijas itself are just a walk away, with shops, restaurants and bars all close by. The narrow streets here are a joy to wander around.
