The aptly named Ponta Grande Resort is a four-star equaivalent timeshare complex with luxury units and villas to the west of Albufeira Marina. It is in a good location for exploring this verdant region of southern Portugal and is close enough for the beaches of the Algarve’s top resort, while boasting eye-pleasing units and facilities.

This low-rise complex features single-storey apartments with sizeable terraces. Each one has its own separate entrance and some units even have their own stretch of manicured lawn. Ponta Grande Resort is noted as a ‘decent family resort’ on review websites, centred as it is on a large pool that is surrounded by a terrace and has a kiddie section.

Rooms and villas are nicely decorated and spacious, with full kitchen and floor to ceiling glass onto a terrace. There are just 40 or so units here—one and two bedroom options—with choice of garden, pool or sea views. Those situated behind the swimming pool have it all, with views over lawn, the pool and out to sea.

Ponta Grande Resort offers room service and an always-attended front desk with friendly staff that can speak a number of languages. Also included is free WiFi internet in public areas, laundry, a babysitting service and basic business facilities.

A playground is situated in full view of the pool area and there’s also a pool table and mini golf, along with an onsite tennis court and bicycle rental. The tennis court is located in its own area behind the accommodation, while the Salgados Golf Course is just a couple of miles from town. Best of all, the beach is a relatively short walk away, about 10 minutes.

There’s also a minimart onsite, or you could of course make use of the restaurant which offers local and international dishes. Nearby Albufeira has the best eating choices, plus there is also good shopping and entertainment in Portugal’s top resort town. Head for The Strip for bars and fun or to the Old Town for sightseeing. Albufeira’s beaches are also special.

Getting to Ponta Grande Resort is straightforward. There’s a shuttle service from the airport at Faro, about 40 minutes. Many guests choose to rent a car as there is a lot to see along the Algarve and the coastal driving is sublime. Drivers have ample parking at the timeshare resort, including, in some cases, parking spaces right up to the units.
