About one hour from Faro Airport, the chilled out Pestana Palm Gardens is a perfect retreat for families and couples in the Carvoeiro area of the Algarve. This four-star rated resort between Portimao and Armacao de Pêra has an elevated setting over the sea near Centeanes beach.

TripAdvisor reviewers rate it very highly for its location on the Algarve and level of amenities. The two-bedroom villa is nicely positioned amid the gardens and swimming pool and near the sea. Decorated in hues of southern Portugal, they blend well in this setting and feature balconies and patios and fully equipped kitchens to include oven, fridge-freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. Off the hall is a shower unit with wc and sink.

The large lounge/dining area has storage space, table and chairs, a sofa bed, and a flat screen TV. This is also where the Wi-Fi router is located (Wi-Fi is free).

Sliding patio doors lead directly out onto a large lawn area where you have access to table and chairs and sun-loungers.

Move upstairs and the front bedroom overlooks the swimming pool, while the rear bedroom enjoys sea views, palm trees and the large grass area where you chill out on one of the sun loungers, or children can play and make new friends.

Each bedroom has fitted wardrobes with sliding doors, side tables with lamp, dressing table/mirror with air conditioning. The rear bedroom has a TV and a safe which is free to use (just input your own personal number to lock/re-open).

There are also car-parking spaces, lined with bougainvillea, directly outside the villa.

Guests have use of a pleasant pool area with a children's pool at the one end. There is also a fitness centre (free to use) and health, beauty, and massage services.

A tennis court towards the entrance of the resort and table tennis are both free to use with equipment supplied.

The poolside bar offers drinks, ice-cream and lunchtime snacks during the day and you have the Pimenta Preta restaurant offering Mediterranean and Portuguese cuisine and wines in the evening. It also serves breakfast for paying customers.

From the Palm Gardens, turn and you are a 10-minute stroll from the beautiful Centeanes beach, which has the O Stop restaurant selling drinks, ice-cream, snacks, and main meals. There are also toilet facilities available.

You can engage in a range of water sports including paddle-boarding, canoeing and high-speed boat trips around the coastline. Alternatively, if you just want a lazy time, you can rent sun-loungers with parasols or just take your own and settle down on the soft sand and enjoy watching the waves whilst soaking up the sun.

Listen for the little bell ringing as that is the noise of the delicious local doughnuts for sale on the beach. They come filled with chocolate and custard!

Those into fitness will also discover some wonderful cliff top walks along the rugged Carvoeiro coast, you can walk all the way to town via the coast. The town also has an excellent complement of shops, restaurants, cafés, and bars on the stretch down towards the main beach.

In the summer there is also entertainment with live music in the square.

Golfers should head to the Pestana Carvoeiro Golf club for its championship courses and discount rates. There are also some quality golf courses near to Albufeira (30 minutes to the east of Carvoeiro).
