Landlocked and with no less than eight borders, when it comes to skiing holidays, Austria is regarded as one of the world's most charming destinations. Having hosted the Winter Olympics on two occasions, Austria offers skiers of all levels wide slopes and a beautiful mountainous backdrop dotted with picturesque villages with some pretty goo après ski too!
But it's not all about the soft, white powdery stuff during the winter months, for those who enjoy something a little different, Austria's stunning landscapes, classical culture and clean mountain air will have you hooked. The fairytale lakeside village of Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut region is one particular attraction which is perhaps best enjoyed in the summer months. Take to the lake for some great views before exploring these beautiful streets on foot. Having prospered as a salt mine in the past you can journey deep into the mountainside and see the subterranean salt lake.
The closest timeshare resort to Hallstatt is the RCI Gold Crown resort of Ferienclub Grundlsee. A luxurious year-round retreat which also enjoys a lakeside setting, Ferienclub Grundlsee has an indoor pool and spa and is tastefully decorated throughout. In summer there are endless activities on the lake from sailing and diving whilst in winter there's over 40km of slopes and an on-site ski school! Other resorts from which the village of Hallstatt makes for a great day trip are the Alpendland Sport Hotel in St Johann im Pongau, the Alpine Club in Schladming and the Golf Und Ferienclub in Radstadt.
Another pretty lakeside destination is Zell am See to the southwest of Salzburg. With good transportation links it is also a good starting point for those embarking on the Grossglockner Alpine Road which leads to Austria's highest peak whilst taking in some truly breathtaking views. Just a couple of miles from Zell am See, Maria Alm has 150km of runs spread over 12 pistes ranging from 800m to 2000m altitude. Notable resorts in Maria Alm include Alpenland Sporthotel and the Macro Polo Club.
Finally, for those looking for something with a little more history, how about Ferienclub Schloss Grubhof? An alpine castle which was first built in the early 14th century, previous patrons even include the King of Bavaria!
