The week on offer is unusual, not Saturday to Saturday but always 15th to 22nd December. You have already organised Christmas, and can now have a week away from it, still get home for the family for Christmas itself. A week in real comfort on the sunny south coast is exactly what is needed after all the preparations. If you have forgotten to get all the presents, Bournemouth has a wide range of shops, both in the centre and at Castle Point which is a large suburban shopping complex. However, the long run of little shops along Boscombe High Street a particular magnet, with boutiques and antiques.
Bournemouth itself is an excellent holiday destination for people of all ages and the Carlton Club boasts the perfect location on the East Cliff. The apartment offers breath-taking views along the 7-mile sandy beach, from the Isle of Wight to the east and Old Harry's Rock in the west. The beach walk runs from Hengistbury Head right through to Sandbanks, and then becomes the SW Coast Path, so you could walk on along the Jurasssic Coast to Minehead (about 630 miles). The beach and a wide variety of leisure activities are just down the zigzag and along the prom with an excellent choice of restaurants, bars, museums, theatres and the Bournemouth International Centre (B.I.C).
Just inland from the famous pier, are the fine gardens. At this time the Gardens are illuminated for Christmas, and include a skating rink, and a Christmas market complete with mulled wine. The pier dates from 1880 and is free. The zipwire back to the beach is not free, and we have not dared it in December. Next to the Pier step into the Oceanarium for an exciting encounter with sharks, sting-rays, and the friendly penguins. The countryside offers many picturesque towns and villages nestled where free roaming ponies and donkeys await in the beautiful New Forest. Wimborne Minster, Poole and Christchurch are all excellent visits.
If you prefer your wildlife wilder, Hengistbury Head is the obvious local target. But the main wildlife targets for a whole day or more, will be around Poole Harbour, at this time of year a refuge for waders and wildfowl of international importance. Start at the Sandbanks chain ferry and on to Swanage and Durlston, then west to the Arne RSPB reserve for the rare fauna and birds of the Dorset heaths, and huge flocks of waders and wildfowl and back to Bournemouth via the lovely old Saxon town of Wareham, and perhaps stopping to watch the waders again at Upton Country Park before swinging back to Bournemouth.
Art enthusiasts will head for the Russell-Cotes House, Garden and Gallery Museum situated on the cliff-top near the Carlton Club. This is the furnishing and collections of a very wealthy couple around 1900, and actually worth the entry fee. Russell-Coates all that Impressionist stuff, so this is a very different picture on to the world of 1900. They now make this particular week a big event, with special visits, and changing exhibitions of great quality.
A short drive from Bournemouth, visitors can enjoy two fine historic towns at Salisbury and Dorchester and the Isle of Purbeck with its famous Lulworth Cove. Poole is also a good visit, especially if you also like ambling along working quaysides and in and out of pubs and cafes. The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra now operates from Poole, but if sport is more your thing, there is Premier League football with Bournemouth AFC at Kings Park.
