Sellers Description*

We have loved visiting this wonderful part of Scotland for many years before and then later with children. It has been like a second home. However we now live much further away, our children have ' flown' and with regret we have decided to sell our week at Craigendarroch.

We have listed just some of the many things we have loved and will miss at Craigendarroch and Ballatar.

Firstly the Lodge, cosy but roomy, tastefully decorated , everything needed for a week in the highlands right down to a picnic flask. Well equipped throughout . Beautiful views with pine trees, mountains in the background, the changing colours of autumn, red squirrels, wild birds on the balcony. Cosying up with games( supplied in the lodge) a good book or a bit of TV in the evenings . Walking to the Country Club in the complex for a delicious bar or restaurant meal, ( the restaurant also hosts speciality nights, always delicious) a quizz night, whisky tasting ( the Men) an evening of Gaelic song or other fine entertainment. During the day we've walked up Craigendarroch 'hill' with amazing views of the surrounding countryside, we've hired bikes in Ballater and cycled along the old 'Royal' railway line, now a trail way to Aboyne and beyond. Talking of which, you can't go to nearby Aboyne without visiting the wonderful 'The Blackfaced Sheep' for a delightful lunch or afternoon tea, they are also an emporium of lovely and unusual gifts and furnishings.

Loch Muick, just out of Ballater, can be found along a long lane to reach the car park, it is wonderful for walking, you will often come across wild deer and across the loch is a house that belonged to Queen Victoria. Lochnagar is challenging but rewarding to climb and the famous whisky distillery of the same name is interesting to visit, especially if you enjoy 'a wee dram'.

Back in Ballater there are numerous local shops, a lovely delicatessen, the best butchers ( used by the Royals!) delightful gift shops and a small department store. It has a wonderful sense of going back in time,( there are no chains, no Starbucks here) at the same time it is also modern and up to the mark. The famous old Royal Railway station has been tastefully converted into a lovely restaurant/cafe, Initially opened as a pop up eating destination by HM King Charles III when he was the Prince of Wales. Now known as Rothesay Rooms, delicious Scottish food is to be found here, it also houses a replica of Queen Victoria's old railway carriage on the rail tracks and her waiting room .

Here you will also find the Information shop, where you can obtain leaflets of local walks and events. The local Ballatar golf course has views you would never see anywhere else, surrounded by Mountains and 'Billy' the golf pro is so friendly and helpful. The best restaurant around is Fish Shop which has had exceptional write ups by esteemed food critics and rightly so. It is worth indulging at least once. The food is superb, the decor delightful with even an old boat as a table! They own the fishmonger next door and all the fish and meat is fresh and locally sourced.

About 10 miles further along on the A93 is the famous Balmoral Castle, near to Crathie church, a favourite of the Royal Family and well worth a visit . Some rooms are open to visitors and the grounds are delightful to wander around. Futhur still along the A93 is Braemar, there's a good mountaineering clothes shop and a few gift shops, best of all is the Fife Arms which has in recent years been amazingly upgraded and the decor is so quirky but very much in keeping with its surroundings. There is even a Picasso on the wall! The 'Butlers' love showing people around, It is worth going there for a cozy lunch or afternoon tea. We've often travelled with friends or family which has been great fun, equally a quiet week alone has been a lovely way of unwinding. The lodges are interspersed with lovely pine trees, the country club is great to relax in with the pool, jacuzzi, sauna , steam room as well as the forementioned eateries and entertainment. We will be sad to loose our Scottish home from home but hope someone else will enjoy it just as much as we have.
