Our first introduction to Madeira was 23 years ago when our cruise ship docked at Funchal whilst on its way to the Caribbean. It was mid-November and seeing holidaymakers relaxing in the sun by their hotel pools made my wife and I think that this would be an ideal place to invest in a timeshare. The following year we bought two weeks at the Madeira Beach Club resort, located in the Pestana Carlton. Our love for the island and trust in the Pestana organisation made us upgrade to the Pestana Grand when it was completed in 2005, and then in 2012, we bought two additional weeks, on a nine-year lease, at the newly constructed Pestana Residence. For the next 9 years, we were able to spend virtually the whole month of October on holiday in Madeira.

The Pestana Grand apartment, known as B20, is based on the second floor and consists of two double bedrooms and a large living room, all having access to an 18.6 sq. m semi-circular south/south-east facing balcony giving spectacular views of the gardens and the Atlantic Ocean. A large bathroom includes a bidet and a smaller "bathroom" where the bath has been exchanged for a shower. The living room has an area for relaxing and/or watching the TV, an eating area, and a kitchen alcove, which includes an oven, hob, and refrigerator.

In weeks 41 and 42 you can see the sunrise and, if you are so inclined, enjoy sunbathing on the balcony loungers until late in the afternoon. The sun sets around 7:30 in the evening, and sunsets can be enjoyed either from the quiet of the pool area or from the promenade between the hotel and the ocean. If you want to stay on the balcony, you can see cruise ships going south to the Canaries or westward to the Caribbean. Either way, it is an ideal start to a relaxing meal in the hotel or before leaving for an evening in Funchal.

What do we like?

The Pestana Grand - The whole hotel complex has a feeling of peace and tranquillity due, mainly to its space, The grounds include a large outdoor pool (unheated) which is surrounded by gardens consisting of lawns, flower beds, and palm trees. Inside is a smaller (heated) indoor pool. The hotel has a large main restaurant and several smaller speciality restaurants. Light music is available most nights in the main entrance lounge. Timeshare owner's requirements are met by a dedicated staff office that caters for booking tours etc. Each week there is a meeting where the owners are informed on events happening both at the resort and on the island and a cocktail party where owners can get together over drinks, to discuss any matter of mutual interest. There is a free daily bus service between the hotel and Funchal between 9am and 7pm. This is very useful for going into Funchal in daylight hours.

Madeira - Funchal is a modern town with all modern amenities such as a concert hall, theatre, and many restaurants catering for all tastes. There is almost a limitless number of things to do, including Levada walks, sailing trips, garden tours, toboggan rides, the cable car, and shows at the theatre, casino, and concert hall. Taxi fares are relatively cheap, though we generally preferred to go by bus, when possible.
