In the surrounding area, there is lots to do. The Kingdom of Fife is particularly well known for golf, and St Andrews is less than 30 30-minute drive away. Other activities that can be arranged in the area are horse riding, clay pigeon shooting, sailing, kayaking, and paddle boarding. The area is known for its many and varied fishing villages. Many of these now host excellent beach walks, and there has been a culinary explosion of local produce.

Particularly noteworthy in this regard is the village of Elie. Elie has a superb beach, a water sports area, and the famous Ship Inn. Popular with families, the older generation and students' day tripping from St Andrews, the beach and the pub are a delight. It is no wonder that Prince William and Kate Middleton spent time here when they were students at St Andrews. You can eat outside, overlooking the beach, where you can watch the Ship Inn cricket team play on the sand, until the tide comes in to stop them playing! Recently, the harbour area of Elie has developed more adventurous water sports facilities, and paddle boards can be hired. There is also sometimes a mobile sauna that can cater to those who like to swim in the sea. Wild swimming has become very popular, and Elie's clean waters are popular with locals and tourists alike.

Back on the Kilconquhar Castle Estate, the castle is the centrepiece. It also has a fine-dining restaurant and a more relaxed bistro. As for The Firs cottage itself, it has three bedrooms, set up as two doubles and a twin. A sofa bed in the main open-plan lounge would allow 8 to sleep. There are three bathrooms and an open-plan lounge with a wood-effect gas fire. The kitchen is modern and has all the elements that you would want from a modern kitchen. At the rear of the property is a veranda with steps down to the grass. On sunny days, the veranda is a good spot for breakfast in the sunshine.
