During a holiday to Madeira in 2003 we walked past the Royal Savoy Resort a few times, wondering what was behind the elegant facade. We soon found out when we accepted an invitation to look around the resort. We liked what we saw so much that halfway through the presentation we had, between ourselves, decided to buy into a week provided the pricing was acceptable - and it was! Our first apartment was a studio and our first visit in 2004. After a couple of visits we decided to trade up to a two-bedroom apartment in 2006 so that family members could join us, and have visited almost every year since then (apart from during the covid pandemic). In the time we have been visiting Madeira, we have noticed that more and more families are holidaying there, and our week falls within the in-demand school summer holidays. The apartment is on the seventh floor, one floor below the reception floor.

Although our apartment is on a fixed-week basis, the Royal Savoy operates an internal exchange programme enabling it to be exchanged for a different week during a window running from twelve months before until twelve months after the contracted week (obviously subject to availability). There are some other entities that provide exchange facilities, but we have found the internal programme entirely suitable for our needs.

We no longer need a two-bedroom apartment, and have decided to sell our week whilst there is still a good number of years available for the purchaser. The apartment comprises two ensuite bedrooms with a dividing door between, enabling it to be used as a two-bedroom suite or as two separate apartments (i.e. comprising (1) a one-bedroom suite complete with large lounge, dining area and a very well appointed kitchen, plus (2) a separate lock-off bedroom with its own entrance door). Each bedroom has its own walk-in wardrobe and large bathroom with a separate large bath and shower. Top quality toiletries are provided in abundance (the brand for our last two visits was Guerlain). In addition to the two bedrooms, a further two guests can be accommodated on a very good quality bed-settee. If re-quired, housekeeping will convert the settee into a bed in late afternoon and convert it back the next morning. In many years, members of our party have slept soundly on the bed-settee. The apartment has a large balcony, complete with furniture, and has an uninterrupted sea view. Unlike many timeshares, the Royal Savoy apartments are serviced daily like a hotel, towels are changed daily and bed linen as required.

Everything about the Royal Savoy is first class but in a very relaxed way. From the genuine smiles that greet you on arrival, to the reception staff, the restaurant staff and, most importantly, housekeeping, everything is excellent and no request too small. Some of the staff have been there since before our first visit.

Turning right from the resort it is a short walk to the centre of Funchal and marina, and a little bit further to the old town. If you turn left, a short walk brings you to the hotel zone. Both of these areas have many restau-rants to choose from, but best of all is that you only have to walk a few minutes to a number of excellent restaurants of all kinds in the area around the Royal Savoy. Our favourites are Hemingways and Casal da Penha, but others are Moynihans Irish Bar, Pub Number 2, the Prince Albert pub and the Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant.
