This is a beautifully appointed apartment on the top floor of the Savoy Palace with wonderful views out to sea. The expertly equipped kitchen area can be hidden behind sliding doors: and if you don't want to cook there are several excellent restaurants within the hotel itself and others nearby. Funchal itself needs to experience; cosmopolitan, lively, friendly, and full of unexpected places such as an aquarium tucked away in a back street, a museum of orchids, a beautiful cathedral and a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes. There are also night clubs, including one in the hotel itself, where it is possible to dance till the early hours. The nightclub in the hotel is on the topmost floor and by a trick of engineering keeps all its noise to itself.
There are sea trips to be had where whales, dolphin and porpoise are spotted daily. With most of the trips it is possible to swim once the boat has reached its spot for the day. And I once swam with a turtle. If swimming is not your thing, then the Lavada walks are wonderful and the bus trips to the other side of the island are well worth the time.
There is a cable car from Funchal which will take you up to Monte. The church there is a dominant feature, and its black and white striped façade can be seen from most of Funchal. The famous botanic garden is a short walk from the cable car and contains a huge variety of local plants including both sugar cane and bananas. Both plants spread from Madeira to the rest of the world and are still cultivated in parts of the Island. In the unmissable Mercado it is possible to buy sugar cane and a wide variety of exotic fruits. The fish market is also in the Mercado and elegant displays of fish caught overnight are displayed for locals, restaurants and self-caters to buy. Black scabbard fish is possibly the most unusual and is delicious served with banana. Sounds odd, tastes great!
The week on offer usually coincides with the Flower Festival when Funchal dresses itself in flowers and all sorts of activities take place down the main boulevard from country dancing to flower arranging demonstrations to stalls selling all manner of crafts. However, it is possible to take the week at other times of the year (or, indeed, take more than one week in a year) and as there are festivals every month it can be difficult to choose. We came one year to the chestnut festival in the autumn when every street corner has a chestnut burner selling cooked chestnuts and once in October when every Sunday world-renown firework manufacturers are invited to demonstrate their wares. There is a free, public viewing area and the city council decides which manufacturer will win Funchal's coveted New Year display by the loudness of the applause at the end of each demonstration.
To all of this must be added the Madeirans themselves; unfailingly polite, kindly and with a love of and pride in their island which shines through all their dealings with the multi-national visitors. This attitude is evident at the Savoy Palace where nothing, it seems, is too much trouble.
There is just one small problem; the beds in the apartment are so comfortable and the pillow menu so personalised that it can be difficult to leave such luxury: but there is so much to do and see that it is worth making the effort.
