Our experience of The Residence

We got introduced to the Porto Mare resort at a welcome meeting we had when we first visited Madeira Island, back in 2008. The first question I asked, "Is it a timeshare?" and the answer was "yes, but don't let that put you off!" They said they would pick us up, show us round the resort, give us lunch, a guidebook to the island and 40 euros for 2 hours of our time! We jumped at the chance and were so pleased that we did.

The resort consists of two hotels (the Eden Mar, the Porto Mare, and the Residence apartments, and they are all interconnected. There are four restaurants, four bars, four pools, a lovely spa, a tennis court, a gym, beautiful gardens, and everything is immaculately maintained. It's all classed as Four-star accommodation and amenities, but we think it's closer to 5-star really.

The staff are warm and friendly and there is a courtesy bus to take you into the heart of Funchal (the capital), but you can walk there if you like!!

There are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars surrounding the resort and there are also other hotels in the Porto Bay group, which you can visit: - such as the Cliff Bay (5 star with a 2 Michelin star restaurant), Serra Golf and Santa Maria.

The island is stunningly beautiful and would thoroughly recommend any of the tours on offer. Owner relations are very good at letting you know what's available and also can book these in advance too plus they are on hand for any issues or questions you have.

As for the apartment, it's got everything you could want really......a sumptuous bedroom, good size lounge, kitchen area and a massive bathroom with a separate walk-in shower and a bath. The apartment is always clean as a maid comes in every day to clean, change towels, and make the bed.

There is outside space for you to relax in and your own loungers to chill out on, but there are also plenty of loungers by the pool areas too (two of which are indoors).

Once we were told the price of the apartment, and had a quick chat, we had no hesitation in signing the contract because of the value for money and once we had, they also said we could have an A La Carte dinner as a thank you, along with the other items promised.

Overall, we can't recommend the Residence or the Porto Mare resort highly enough.
