In March, the climate is in general excellent for hiking in Madeira, and we have truly enjoyed exploring the island and many of the spectacular and truly world-class hikes the beautiful island has to offer. We have also visited lava beaches and been swimming in the ocean after hiking, done canyoning & coasteering, scuba diving, visited the spectacular botanical gardens, lava caves, played tennis, gone horse-back riding, whale & dolphin watching, sunset cruising, slide down the mountain above Funchal with the unique Madeira toboggan, seen the Madeira Carnival, visited the interesting Madeira Whale Museum and much more with our kids.
There are tons of nice and affordable restaurants and cafes for all tastes close-by, and also well-stocked supermarkets and a modern shopping mall - all within walking distance.
You can use the Alto Lido shuttle to get to the lovely old town of Funchal with an abundance of charming sea-food restaurants, nice food markets and in my opinion, the best tea shop in the world (Loja Do Cha Madeira).
The unit is actually two separate rooms with interconnecting doors that are possible to lock. Each room is spacious and has a nice bathroom, king-size bed, TV, sit-group and refrigerator, and balconies with comfy sun chairs and a table. One of the rooms also has a kitchenette and a small dining table, the other one has a desk.
The rooms are 3 floors up from street level, same as the outdoor pools and the great terrace with lovely sunbeds and a cafe/snack bar. It is even possible to exit directly from the private balconies to the large terrace facing the ocean.
There is also a great spa and indoor pool by the big terrace in particular the top level of the terrace has a spectacular sea view.
Alto Lido has a great breakfast buffet, restaurant and bars, the lobby bar with entertainment every evening. There is also a pool table, some Yoga/Pilates classes etc. The entire resort is in very good shape and tidy after recent renovations and the rooms are cleaned daily. The resort is both handicap- and child friendly. Rooms are well ventilated, isolated and quiet.
Weeks are from Wednesday to Wednesday, week 9 (-10) and 10 (-11), they may be purchased separately or together. It is possible to exchange weeks/exchange days (subject to availability of course), within the resort. If you elect to be member of RCI, you can deposit weeks and exchange points received for other timeshares all over the world. As the Alto Lido weeks are highly valued, there are a lot of opportunities to see other places as well.
It is possible to get around the island without a car by bus and/or taxi (or cable car if you go to Monte the mountain above Funchal), but if you prefer to rent a car, it is possible to park on the street or in the Alto Lido garage. Transfer to and from airport can be booked through Alto Lido. It is possible to go hiking etc. on your own, or book guided tour(s).
