We have had a timeshare in the Marriott Playa Andaluza since 2006 and have stayed there 8 times. When we bought it, we opted for one week every second year because we have a holiday home and we did not anticipate using the timeshare every year. However, we opted for the biggest apartment type in the resort with 3 bedrooms which includes a facility to 'lock off' part of the apartment into a separate one-bedroom unit thereby effectively giving us 2 weeks each second year. Each time, my wife and I spent the first week in the one bed unit and for the second week we shared the rest of the apartment with friends (carefully selected). We chose the Silver Season which allowed us to choose 2 weeks any time between November and the end of February (excluding Christmas and New Year). There are a limited number of these large 'lock-off' apartments so it is well worth booking as far in advance as permitted (12 months) in order to get a high floor and the warmest weeks. There are lifts and baggage trolleys to make your transfer from car in the basement car park to apartment as convenient as possible.

The apartment is very well appointed with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The master bedroom has a dressing area with a bath and a separate shower and toilet room. All of the fittings are of the highest quality. To this is added the daily cleaning by the resort staff. This ensures that bathrooms and kitchen are always clean and tidy. The living area of the apartment is very spacious with a kitchen separated from the living room by a wide service area; the dining area has a table for 8 and the sitting area is equipped with comfortable chairs and a settee which, if we wish can be changed into beds for 2 extra guests. There is a large flat screen TV and a sound system. The kitchen is equipped with oven, hob, microwave, dishwasher, and fridge. Off the kitchen is a utility area with washing machine and dryer. The living area opens directly onto a large balcony with a table and chairs. We always took our breakfast there which, with the view over the garden, was most pleasant. (see Photograph). The maintenance of the apartment continues into the garden which is constantly tended by a team of gardeners.

The apartment is especially secure as it is entered through a private hallway off which are 2 doors, one into the 1 bed apartment (with en-suite bathroom and fitted kitchen); the other into the main part of the apartment. These doors can be left open to provide an integrated space. When we used the 'lock-off' facility there were other tenants in the other part.

The resort has a huge range of facilities. The reception area with staff handling bookings and enquiries and a concierge who makes golf reservations; provides directions; recommends restaurants etc. Of this is a 24-hour food hall and a small cafe. There is an ATM and internet terminals. Beside the outdoor swimming pool (see Photograph) is a large building which contains an excellent restaurant, an indoor pool with jacuzzi, a well-equipped gym with changing rooms. From the pool area there is direct access to the beach which offers the possibility of long walks as well as swimming in the sea. Each week the restaurant puts on a demonstration of cooking (we learned the local recipe for paella) followed after dinner by a Flamenco show. (see attached photograph)

Playa Andaluza is particularly well located between Estepona, San Pedro and Puerto Banus. The area is a huge attraction for golfers with many challenging and scenic courses. There are many picturesque villages within easy reach by car. The East-West motorway runs nearby the resort so getting to nearby towns and sights is very easy. We would particularly recommend Ronda, Malaga, and Marbella in the near vicinity. Other places we have visited include Granada, Cordoba, Jerez, Cadiz. Andalusia is a wonderland of history and architecture.

The area provides a bewildering choice of restaurants. This is during our Silver Season which runs from November to the end of February. There are a dozen restaurants within comfortable walking distance if you do not have a designated driver. Farther afield we would recommend La Escollera in Estepona; Bora Bora in San Pedro; The Orange Tree in Marbella or La Barca in Puerto Banus.

Playa Andaluza is about 55 minutes from Malaga Airport. The resort is at KM 168 on the motorway to Cadiz which makes it very simple to find.

We joined Interval International and used it to trade our week in Playa Andaluza for a week in a villa on the Caribbean coast of Guatemala. The exchange procedure was very simple and if you wished, you could trade the two halves of the 'lock-off' for two separate exchanges.

We are selling our timeshare reluctantly. We have enjoyed our time in Andalusia and seen most of the wonders it offers to explore. However, we are getting older and we find it easier to go to our holiday home by car than have to endure the rigours of air travel. Younger people with younger children would be able to enjoy the facilities and sights which Plays Andaluza has to offer.
