The Pestana Miramar Garden Resort is a 4 Star Gold Crown hotel, about 20 minutes' drive from Madeira Airport and ideally situated a short walk from the centre of the island's capital, Funchal. Built around a former classical manor house (quinta), now elegantly restored, it is set in 5 acres of stunning, sub-tropical gardens.

The Apartment
The deluxe apartment, which can sleep up to six people, is located on the fifth floor, has mountain and sea views and overlooks a swimming pool and gardens. It is very spacious and tastefully decorated, fully air-conditioned and double-glazed. There are two large double bedrooms, one with en suite bathroom. A second bathroom is opposite the other bedroom (please see apartment plan). The sitting room is attractively furnished and very comfortable, with a sofa bed for two people. It has a separate dining area with a wooden table and six chairs. Both the sitting room and the master bedroom have a TV and a telephone. Full patio doors open onto a large balcony which can easily accommodate six people, having four chairs and two sun loungers. It can also be accessed from the master bedroom.

Facilities/Amenities
The apartment has a full kitchen, equipped with everything guests might need, including fridge-freezer, cooker, microwave, kettle, coffee maker, toaster, etc. There is a chambermaid service.

The Miramar shares its site with the Pestana Village resort so that timeshare owners benefit from the amenities of both. These include several restaurants; bars, often with music and entertainment in the evening; two outdoor swimming pools (with children's area) and one indoor, with Jacuzzi; health and fitness centre with gym and sauna; hairdresser; spa; games rooms; libraries; Wi-Fi; facilities for small children; and, of course, extensive and peaceful gardens to relax, sunbathe (loungers provided) or stroll in.

Locality
A few yards from the Miramar's entrance are two mini supermarkets, an excellent bakery/patisserie/coffee shop, open from early until well into the evening, a newsagent and a gelateria. On the way to Funchal centre, just past the Presidential Palace, there is a delightful little park leading to the large harbour and seafront area. Buses into Funchal are frequent and cheap, and they stop just by the resort entrance. Taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced. The resort also has an underground car park.

Funchal
Funchal's great traditions and beautiful buildings give it a unique character and atmosphere. Its colonial architecture - palaces, churches, fortresses and administrative buildings - dates from 1400 through to 1800. Local attractions include a cable car with stupendous views up to Monte then on to the famous Botanical Gardens, the old town with its ancient fort and narrow, cobbled streets, museums, traditional fruit, flower and fish markets, dolphin and whale watching and deep sea fishing. There are two large shopping centres, supermarkets and a pleasing mix of smaller local boutiques and designer stores; a wide choice of restaurants, many close to the Miramar, offering fine dining, international fare, and local cuisine, including excellent fish restaurants, mostly inexpensive and very good value; an abundance of bars and pavement cafés; cinemas, concerts, theatre; and a casino with floor shows.

Madeira
Madeira, "the jewel of the Atlantic", is an incredibly beautiful island with spectacular scenery and dramatic seascapes, magnificent coastlines, glorious gardens and parks full of exotic and colourful flowers and plants, golf courses - and a most agreeable climate.

Sightseeing tours, bookable through the Miramar (and with pick up from the resort), offer trips all over the island, while independent travellers can use the buses stopping just outside the Miramar entrance to explore the island's many attractions.

Timeshare Membership
The apartment is available on a fixed week basis. Week 45 falls in early November, a very good time to escape from a dark and dreary autumn at home to warm and sunny Madeira. And perhaps to do some Christmas shopping. The week can be exchanged for a different one, or for accommodation in another Pestana resort. It can also be "banked" for future use if owners want some flexibility. The timeshare expires at the end of 2030.
