This is a large lodge, spanning two levels, located in the beautiful Scottish Highlands.

Downstairs the lodge has three double bedrooms, each offering spectacular Loch views. One of the bedrooms (the largest) is en-suite. There is also a sauna, and another bathroom/shower on this level. Upstairs is a huge, fully equipped diner-kitchen-living area, with large dining table, games/card playing table (with chess, draughts etc), TV and DVD player, and a large enclosed balcony offering a fabulous view (pictured) of the Loch. To the left from the balcony, you can also see Schiehallion, the famous pointy mountain (a classic munro) where experimenters first estimated the mass of the earth back in the eighteenth century. Schiehallion is about a 20 minute drive away. It's a pretty easy walk most of the way up, though with a bit of a scrabble to the very top where you are rewarded with amazing highland mountain views all the way to Ben Nevis.

The lodge backs on to the hillside (so you are not overlooked in any way) while the front faces the Loch. The upstairs area includes a funky pull-down double bed that emerges from the wall like something from an Austin Powers movie. It is very comfortable (and kids adore it) and brings the total sleeping capacity up to an easy 8. The lodge has free wifi, which is a bit slow but pretty reliable. You pay for the electricity used that week when you leave. The lodges are dog-friendly.

The week is fixed - week 22 every year. That means late May/Early June, and this is a great time as the weather is often good, but it is well before the infamous midge season that can make high summer much more challenging.

The lodge has its own parking space. Do be aware, however, that there is a steep little flight of steps from there to the lodge entrance. It's only a couple of minutes walk as you can tell from the picture of the lodge taken from the car-spot (it's the one with the woman in the yellow sweater looking out from the balcony). It's like climbing about two or three small flights of stairs. Inside the lodge, there is one more flight of stairs joining the bottom level (where the bedrooms are) to the top. The payoff, of course, is the fabulous view from the top. On the bright side, my elderly mother and father both managed the steps and stairs, and visited well into their 80's.

The complex itself is attached to (but not owned by) the neighbouring Rannoch Hotel. This is a very convenient spot to get decent pub food, morning coffee, and evening drinks. They have a few tables and chairs outside with views of the Loch and Schiehallion too. If you fancy a change, the truly excellent Moor of Rannoch Hotel Restaurant is a short drive or taxi ride away - taxis can be arranged by the folk at the lodge reception.

The nearby village (Kinloch Rannoch) is about a 10-15 minute walk, or a 3 minute drive, away. There is a great little 'beach' area as you get to the village, with views right up the loch. The village has a great coffee shop and a village store for basic supplies. But currently, that's all there is in the village itself.

The folk that run these lodges seem very friendly and genuine. They have an office/reception in Kinloch Rannoch, and are delighted to offer advice and suggestions for local activities. and my impression is that it really is being run for the benefit of the members. Many of the folk I speak to out at the lodges have been coming back for many years.

Nearby, there is great climbing, cycling, and walking, and there are some (rather limited) watersports available on the Loch. The nearest major centre is Pitlochry, about 24 miles (but a 40 minute drive down winding roads) away, with a great range of shops and activities. Pitlochry has excellent rail and road links to the rest of Scotland. From the lodge, you are also well-placed to drive down to Rannoch Station where trains head across spectacular moorlands towards the west coast.

It is with some sadness that I am putting this up for sale. The week belonged to my mother, who recently left it to me in her will, and we have had many happy family reunions up there over the years. If you like fantastic scenery, just sitting at that balcony will tick every box. In the early morning, the Loch is sometimes half-hidden by mists, and every kind of weather (sun, mist, and rain - it is Scotland after all) looks spectacular from that cosy vantage point.
