The Royal Savoy, Funchal, Madeira is an award winning resort, voted 2nd best in the world by the Daily Telegraph some years ago and incredibly difficult to exchange into (II member) because of its popularity. It is only 10 minutes walk into Funchal centre down a pleasant jacaranda avenue and through beautiful parkland, You can access the sea from the resort but may prefer the heated salt water pools, both inside and out. The pool area includes bars,restaurants and drinks and snacks can be brought to you on your lounger. The whole resort emanates luxury. The owner worked in South Africa previously so the decor includes many interesting artefacts. Your maid turns back the sheets and leaves a chocolate on the pillow every night. The staff are delightful and nothing can be too much trouble. Other facilties are a gym, sauna, steam bath and Scottish shower plus opportunities for beauty and massage treatments. Nightly, there is music in the bar, often bringing artists from UK as well as local ones. The resort specialises in holding incredible buffets on a weekly basis but there are countless restaurants locally, in the picturesque Old Town and marina serving local dishes such as espada, plus, other fish plus you can still go for an Indian or Chinese if you prefer.

This apartment was bought from plan because it overlooks the roof garden of jasmine and agapanthus, beyond which is the blue of the Atlantic Ocean. The balcony is pretty large and gets the sun most of the day,side views are Reid's Hotel on its cliff on one side and the harbour on the other where many cruise boats will anchor. Both the living room and the bedroom have access to the balcony. The bed is enormous but can be unzipped if needed to make two singles. There is a spacious bathroom with separate bath and shower and there is another bathroom serving the living room where there is a comfortable sofa bed that can sleep two. There is plenty of audio-visual equipment plus TV in both rooms. Other facilities include a well equipped kitchen so it is possible to self cater if you want and air conditioning. It is on the fifth floor and the lifts are close enough to the apartment but not so close for any annoying lift noise to be heard.

The airport is some 30 minutes away and taxis are readily available but there is also an airport bus which almost drops you at the door. There is a garage at the resort. You can have many types of holidays here-wandering around gardens-it is the garden island, walking-thousands of kilometres of levada and mountain paths, sightseeing-it is an island of many contrasts-and just lazing by the pool. This week there is a good chance that it will coincide with the Flower Festival which has to be seen-a fantastic display and parade of flowered decked floats built by the whole community-Easter too has many flower traditions-and what flowers, bird of paradise, arum liliies, protea-everything grows here! You will find several small concerts available including a mandolin orchestra, you can go round Blandy's for Madeira tasting and there is a growing number of attractions for children.
