The Pestana Ocean Promenade complex is situated in Funchal around a 30 minute transfer from the airport. The hotel is built alonside the promenade which runs along the edge of the island of Madeira. The town is very proud of this beautiful walkway and one can walk from the outskirts of Funchal along to the town centre in around 40 minutes. The length of the promenade is dotted with restaurants and bars so it makes for a lovely evening stroll to where you can sit and enjoy your supper overlooking the water. There are also plenty of public buses that stop outside the hotel if you prefer to eat in the town centre. About a ten minute walk away is a good supermarket where one can buy all the essentials as well as Madeiran specialities.

The Promenade was completed in 2009 and is a 4/5 Star complex including two swimming pools and a childrens paddling pool, a poolside cafe/bar and beautiful gardens which brim with colourful plants and palm trees. There are numerous other attractions including an indoor pool, a spa suite, gym and members' library with computer and of course lifts to all floors. The Sea Breezes Restaurant serves wonderful food and also has live musical entertainment most evenings. There is always a Members' cocktail party on Tuesday evening to meet new and old friends.

The week for sale is Week 25 which is the last week in June. The temperature at this time is in the upper 70s - 80 degrees F (24 - 26 C) just right to get a tan, but not so hot that it becomes oppressive. This week also coincides with the Atlantic Festival in Funchal. On the last Saturday, there is a fantastic international firework competition set on the harbour when the local families and the tourists mingle to watch the displays.

The 2nd floor appartment is very well appointed and includes a large double bedroom and en suite bathroom with two basins, shower and bath and toilet. The sliding doors open onto a double balcony with table and chairs and sun loungers. The sitting room has a double sofa bed (which according to friends is very comfortable) and sliding doors to the balcony and there is another shower room and toilet . The kitchen includes a dishwasher, microwave and oven and enough dishes for four people. Both rooms have flat screen TVs with Sky and British channels (BBC, ITV etc). There is air-conditioning in both rooms as well, so it is comfortable to sleep at night.

The view from the balcony is breathtakingly beautiful. Blue sea as far as the horizon, palm trees and flowers in the resort and it is lovely to sit and breakfast watching the complex come to life in the mornings.

Madeira is a magical island. Because of its natural springs, it is known for its marvellous greenery and flowers and nowhere better to see them than the Botanical Gardens. On a trip to the west side of the island, one travels from Bougainvillea and gekkos through pine forest with wild garlic, up and up to the top of the second highest cliff in Europe, where there is heather and bracken like an English moor and the clouds seem to sit on your shoulders.

Funchal is a lovely ancient town with a mix of tourists and working population rubbing shoulders. The Cathedral is certainly worth visiting as is the Madeiran Embroidery factory and there are lots of shops, cafes and restaurants. The Madeirans are incredibly friendly and it feels very safe at night. Most people can speak a bit of English and will certainly help if they can. The staff in the Promenade do their utmost to make your stay as comfortable and easy as possible and some people have been holidaying in Pestana resorts for over 25 years.
