Our timeshare is situated at the Royal Savoy Hotel in Funchal. Madeira is a delightful island renowned for its beautiful flowers and gardens. There are many ways to enjoy the island's attractions, with its high cliffs and spectacular views over the Atlantic, as well as walking along the levadas which run alongside the streams and canals that bring water down from the mountains. Because the island is relatively compact, everywhere is fairly close and there is no need for lengthy drives to see the main attractions. The capital, Funchal, is a small town with some historic Portuguese buildings, as well as an abundance of shops and restaurants, so that it is easy to eat well at reasonable prices.

The Royal Savoy is about twenty minutes drive from the airport. It is a really elegant hotel with beautiful grounds. The rooms and public areas are richly furnished and most comfortable. The apartments have all the facilities that you would expect in five-star accommodation. Our studio is approximately 38 square metres. It has a fully-equipped kitchen and bathroom, a large double bed, and a comfortable seating area where it is possible to convert the sofas to enable two more people to stay in the room. We are located on the first floor, easily accessible by lift. There are glorious views from the balcony of our studio, overlooking the gardens and the sea.

The Royal Savoy has so many attractions you would hardly need to venture outside (although you would be missing the attractions of Funchal if you did so). As a member of the Vacation Club you enjoy all the facilities on offer, including a gym, health spa, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, crazy golf, various restaurants and bars.

We purchased our apartment in 2003, the year after the Royal Savoy opened, for a thirty-year term. We have greatly enjoyed our visits to the Royal Savoy. Although the week we purchased is Week 26 (late June/ early July), one of the great benefits has been the ability to swap this week for a different week, and for other partner timeshares via Interval International. So we have stayed in Grand Canary with our grandchildren in August, Florida and Lanzarote in autumn and visits to walk in the Austrian Alps in June.

The reason why we have decided to sell the timeshare is that we will no longer be able to make much use of it. We find that as young parents our children have not wanted a holiday in Madeira, whilst one of them is about to go and live abroad. So much of our available holiday time will be devoted to visiting them, whilst we have also grown increasingly attracted to cruising.
