Mercia Marina lies in the heart of England’s network of 18th and 19th century canals which fuelled the Industrial Revolution by transporting products between the mills, factories, major cities and ports. Classic Narrowboat timeshare barges are moored at the recently-developed luxury marina on the Trent and Mersey Canal connecting the Potteries’ five towns with Liverpool.
Nowadays, the marina and canal are hubs for leisure, with the boats moored here sleeping between two and six people and outfitted with every necessity for a unique holiday. Owners can either cruise the historic waterway and its locks, or stay in the marina and tour they many attractions and natural beauties of the region.
Narrow boats are equipped with galley-style kitchens, cosy living spaces and bedrooms, although the beds themselves may be smaller than usual. Berths at the marina provide mains electricity and water, and the complex offers facility blocks, dog-walking areas, WiFi, a convenience store, full security and a range of holiday lodges for rent or sale.
The pretty Derbyshire village of Willington is set on the River Trent just a short drive from Derby, and has its own wetlands nature reserve on its southern edge. The Derbyshire peaks and deals are within a comfortable drive, and the many magnificent English ‘stately homes’ in the area with their glorious grounds and gardens make for a great daytrip.
