Situated near the coast just outside Madeira capital Funchal sits the Alto Lido, with its comfortable studios and apartments and huge swimming pool and terrace. All timeshare units are stunningly decked out in the traditional look of Madeira and come with balcony and sea view to take full advantage of the year-round sun here.
Alto Lido is well rated on some of the top review websites, with couples and families making special note of its cleanliness and peacefulness. It is well located, around 30 minutes from central Funchal on foot, and is also close to the south’s black sand beaches. From here, you can stroll the seafront right up to Funchal’s buzzing harbour and also take in its cobbled streets.
The timeshare options are a combination of studio rooms and one bedroom units with balcony, satellite TV, telephone and kitchenette with fridge. Rooms are fully air-conditioned and very comfy. Resort facilities are quite comprehensive and include the large outdoor swimming pool—with adjacent kid’s pool—an indoor pool, Jacuzzi, gym and games room.
There is also a restaurant here, the popular Baia Azul, along with the Café Lido and a bar in the lobby area. Business types can also have the use of a conference room at Alto Lido and there is an internet café and sizeable car park.
If you prefer to have a night in and cook, there are supermarkets nearby, along with a good selection of restaurants and bars down at the promenade. For visits to Funchal itself, Alto Lido lays on a complimentary shuttle service several times a day, while walking tours of this stunning volcanic island depart regularly.
Funchal is the island highlight, with cobblestoned Santa Maria having the best of the historic sightseeing. You can take the cable car from here up to Monte to gain fine views and see the Our Lady of the Mount church, along with photogenic palaces and gardens, and then hurtle back down in a must-do Funchal toboggan.
Many visitors choose to rent a car and explore, and there are plenty of beautiful drives and hideouts on Madeira, with rugged scenery, ancient forests and caves, quiet beaches and quaint villages being de rigueur. Funchal Ecological Park is a special daytrip and there is some great sailing, diving and dolphin watching, too.
Madeira Funchal Airport is on the other side of town and a 20-30 minute transfer by taxi from Alto Lido. Buses also run to town.
