Our family has been attending the Langdale estate for the last 40 years. It is our favourite place to vacation, and we have introduced multiple generations of our family to the beauty and fun of the Lake District.

The estate is hidden from the surrounding areas, but once inside, it is a calm and peaceful place to unwind and relax. The lodges are all wonderful, but this particular unit is something special. The two ground-floor rooms are perfectly appointed for a family - two singles in one and a double in the other, both ensuite (including a jacuzzi bath in the master for ultimate relaxation). There's a drying cabinet - which you're going to need for your swimming costumes after you've visited the modern country club nearby). Then upstairs, there's an additional double bed (hidden away when not in use), a lovely kitchen with stone worktops, leather sofas, TV, stereo, Wi-Fi, and a further bathroom (which even has a sauna). But the best feature is the balcony, which looks out over a pond and central island, fed by the many small streams that crisscross the estate. As the lodge is "upside down" in layout, the balcony makes the most of the incredible setting. This particular one also benefits from a premium, secluded position, as it is at the end of one of the lanes, meaning there is no passing traffic (of which there is a tiny amount anyway) with enough space to park two cars easily out front.

As a time-share owner, you have access to the country club free of charge for your stay. With a heated pool, steam room, spa pool, gymnasium, and child's soft playroom. Plus, there are discounts at the Brimstone restaurant and local Wainwrights pub (try the ribs and the local ale). The pub is a short stroll through the estate and along the river and is owned by the Langdale estate. A few yards more is the village store, selling all the essentials you forgot to pack - such as bird seed for the pheasants and ducks, which call the Langdale estate home.

The local area offers the best walks and scenery in the country. Langdale is a scenic walk over a hill to Grasmere - the resting place of William Wordsworth and home to the UK's most famous gingerbread shop. You're also a short drive from Coniston water, Grasmere forest's sculpture walks, Go Ape, Windermere, Bowness, and Ambleside. Our favourite walk is down to Skelworth Bridge, because once you reach your destination, you can reward yourself with a Hot Chocolate with 'The Works'.

The lodge sleeps 6 comfortably, and the week available is Week 11 - which is fixed to the middle of March each year (Langdale issues a calendar) with a Saturday change-over day.

We have had our timeshare at Langdale for almost 4 decades, and it feels like home. As a child, I used to count down the weeks and days till we could go back. I wouldn't trade those memories for anything. We are deeply saddened that our family situation means we can no longer attend and are supremely jealous of those lucky enough to take it on.
