We have owned this lodge on Royal Deeside for over 20 years and loved coming here each May. The Dee valley seems to have its own micro climate, so we have rarely been disappointed with the weather. There is normally still snow on the top of Lochnagar and the melt continues to keep the Dee in full spate and the many local waterfalls are spectacular. The fishing can be dour for salmon, but it would be a rare year when I did not catch a few wild brown trout on the Gairn for at least one breakfast. It is no surprise that the Royal family also love it up here and various members will be seen from time to time shopping in nearby Ballater. They also use our swimming pool!

The lodge is set on an attractive wooded hillside, overlooking the Dee and has parking for two cars, which is just as well, as we usually invite guests to join us. There are two ensuite bedrooms downstairs along with a utility room with washing machine and a drying cupboard. The master bedroom has a whirlpool bath and underfloor heating. Luxury!

Upstairs is a third loo and big walk in shower and, of all things, a sauna. The spacious open plan kitchen, dining area and sitting room lets out by two big patio doors onto a large verandah, complete with a table and chairs. The sitting room area has massive armchairs and settee and that's where we sit watching Tv and using the Wi-Fi. Internet access is better than you might expect for such an out of the way place. Neatly folded into the attractively panelled wall is a third double bed that simply lets down to accommodate a third couple should you so wish.

The kitchen is fully equipped, and you can have staples delivered in advance. You can also have room service from the nearby Hilton Hotel kitchens. The main building, a very short walk from the lodge, used to be the country home of the Dundee Keiller family, of marmalade fame, was for many years a hotel but is now divided into holiday let suites. It has a cocktail lounge which often has entertainment in the evenings and an excellent restaurant. In the same building is a swimming pool with a massive hot tub, a gym, snooker room and a squash court.

In the old days we also had a dry ski slope and a curling lake, but the world has moved on. We find it relaxing there and we have done a great deal of walking and hill climbing, I fish, and we have enjoyed pony trekking when the kids were younger. Nowadays, we like to hire electric bikes and cycle all along the disused railway line. Friends who come and stay always like to visit Balmoral and we introduce them the Braemar, Loch Muick, the Burn o' Vat and the Falls at Glas Allt and the Linns of Muick and Dee.

We shall miss it all.
