Pestana Palms Resort is on the western outskirts of Funchal, the island's historical city, a 35 minute walk to the harbour.  Palms is in an area known as Lido and there are plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars close by as well as the start of an esplanade / seafront walk that takes you further west to the town of Camara de Lobos.  An excellent supermarket is only minutes away on foot.  There is also a regular bus service to Funchal's centre with its local and international shops, museums and galleries as well as the marina and harbour with boat trips, cable car up to Monte and the Botanical Gardens and the famous wicker sledge run.  There's always plenty to do as well as simply relax.

Pestana Palms is a small resort and has an atmosphere of 'family' about it.  It is notable that there is a very stable clientele and that even members of staff who leave Palms for promotion to bigger, more modern resorts, say, "my heart is at Palms".  Owners generally have a great affection for it, mainly because of its size and very personal atmosphere.   The original building used to be the estate house or 'quinta' and is now a bar and bistro restaurant (with live music on a number of evenings) where owners and hotel guests can socialise.   There are two buildings with accommodation and very few apartments have no view of the sea.  There is lift and stair access to a fresh water swimming pool and sun deck as well as access to sea swimming in calm conditions.  We personally greatly enjoy the close proximity to the sea.   A kitchen provides lunches here and hot and cold drinks can be had at its bar. Also at this level is a small gym, sauna and jacuzzi as well as beauty therapy treatment rooms.

On Madeira, Pestana is a well known name and the Pestana Group has developed a number of Apartment Hotels on the island.  These are all affiliated to RCI.  At present, our Week 9 is owned by us in RCI's 'points' system and it can remain like that or convert back to a standard ownership.  For us, points has worked well and Week 9 has a particularly high points value in RCI's exchange system (67,500).  Or it can simply be held as a fixed week.   Over the last twenty years we have usually visited Pestana Palms but we have also had many successful exchanges using our points to countries including New Zealand and Canada as well as cities (London, Paris, Venice) and canal boat holidays.

Pestana Palms Resort has a contract with owners which we think is particularly beneficial.  We can opt to pay our annual maintenance in sterling or in euros.  It's our choice.  Also we have limited maintenance increases over the years.  In 2010 we paid £188.91 for this week, £200.09 in 2011, £211.92 in 2012, and £229.12 in 2013.

Why are we selling when it all sounds so good?  We've just bought another 3 weeks, bringing our total to 11 weeks including two of those being Week 9.  We are selling our solitary Week 9 as a result.
