Our chalet is situated in Slaley Hall which is about 5miles from the old market town of Hexham Northumberland, England. Our chalet is well situated for shopping in both Hexham and down the road in Newcastle which has a massive indoor shopping centre as well as the more traditional high street areas. Slaley itself is set in the Northumberland countryside which hosts excellent sections of Hadrians Wall, the Penines, little villages as well as the attraction of Newcastle and larger towns with the excellent shopping restaurants and entertainment. It is also an ideal location from which to explore the North East Coast of England with fantastic beaches such as Scarborough in North Yorkshire still within travelling distance. There are historic coastal towns such as Berwick upon Tweed (the only English team that plays in the Scottish League) and Alnwick, where the castle that was used in the Harry Potter movies is found (fantastic day out for all the family). Whilst staying at the chalet we have taken friends on a day trip to Scotland's famous Gretna Green and Edinburgh Castle. Also within daytrip distance is the religious island of Lindisfarne. The resort itself contains Slaley Hall which is a historic county home that has had its old wood panelling and open fireplaces preserved whilst new wings have been developed to accommodate its current life as a hotel. In the Hall residents of the chalets have access to an excellent swimming pool, gym, beauty therapy suite, restaurants, bars and most of all for those that like golf, two championship golf courses. We bought originally so that we could have an out of season ‘get away’ where we could just chill with our 4 young children at the time. Now they have grown we have used it to entertain friends and on occasion just for the 2 of us. The benefit is that you can hide yourself away and relax or just make use of the facilities on site or be more energetic and explore the countryside, the history and the city life. It enables you to choose whatever type of holiday you want. Our unit is based on a Swiss chalet style. AS you enter the front door there is a hallway off of which are the 2 guest bedrooms (1 with en suite shower), the main bathroom with Jacuzzi bath and sauna and the large kitchen diner. 6 or so stairs lead up to the main living area which has settees and television etc. at one end with a small round glass dining table at the other so you have the choice of eating more formally downstairs or up in the lounge area. We tend to use this table for lunch and games etc. and entertain downstairs (we have even hosted a weekend with friends based on the come dine with me programme! There are again about 6 stairs leading up centrally from the main living area onto a small landing which has a computer area and double doors leading into the massive master bedroom and ensuite. The nice thing about this chalet is that there is room for families and friends to socialise and still have space to sit separately and read whilst others are watching tv etc. Also off the main living area are double doors onto a good sized balcony. This gives views across Northumberland to Cumbria and the lake district. Ours is a fixed week and we chose the end of March as this coincided with our work cycle and the need to ‘get way’ for a week of relaxation. However it has coincided with Easter and we have had a week of glorious sunshine where we had a BBQ on the balcony and one year we had heavy snowfall and the children played outside and built a fantastic snowman. Obviously you take your chance with the weather at that time in the season but the setting lends itself to both sun and winter scenes and with the choice of on site or local attractions (both indoor and outdoor) you are not controlled by the weather. We have exchanged our week once as we wanted to take all the family to Florida, the exchange potential is massive as we secured a large ‘split’ apartment which could sleep 10 and allowed one part of it to be ‘locked off’, so my daughter and her partner and baby could have their own privacy whilst still being ‘with us’. We haven’t done any other exchanges as basically we look at Slaley as our home from home 1 week of the year.
We are now selling purely because close family are moving to Italy and we are buying a small house and intend to spend future holidays there and then retire out there. All our children were disappointed at us selling as it held happy memories of family holidays but they are looking forward to the Italy phase now!
