Nestling between tree-lined meadows on one of the Trent River’s navigational cuts, Sawley Marina is home to Canaltime with its charming timeshare narrow boats. Sawley is the UK’s largest inland marina, covering 23 acres of the peaceful English countryside close by Long Eaton in the East Midlands.
Residential moorings with mains electricity are provided for 600 boats of varying sizes, and the marina offers CCTV, security gates, storage facilites and other amenities for timeshare and other boat owners. Timeshare boats are found off the enclosed Platinum area wharf, which offers owners car parking, waste disposal facilities and a nearby chandlery, other stores and a restaurant.
Narrow boats are modern, prettily fitted out and colourfully painted in the traditional style going back two centuries. Most are aluminium nowadays, giving amenities such as microwaves, grills and hobs, heating and hot water by gas or electricity, and most have onboard diesel engines for touring the Midlands’ canal network. Two- and four-berth boats are offered and it’s possible to stay in the marina as well as cruise.
Derbyshire with its beautiful, wild Peak District is famed among hikers, walkers and lovers of unspoiled nature, and Long Eaton is a typical Derbyshire market town with cosy pubs, a high street, market place, heritage buildings and interesting examples of industrial architecture such as Harrington Lace Mill. The Erewash Canal meanders through the town, and a concert by the famous Brass Band is unmissable.
