Holiday Club Sol Amadores Puerto Rico Canary Islands

Sol Amadores on the rugged south coast of Gran Canaria makes for a great escape for families looking to kick back for a week of year-round sun. An RCI Gold Crown resort set back off the coast and up the hill, this modern timeshare resort features three dozen apartments about 15 minutes on foot from the beautiful Amadores beach.

All rooms at Sol Amadores sport a large balcony, some coming complete with Jacuzzi. Apartments are one or two bedroom, the latter of which are huge and good for six people. Units have an open-plan kitchen and lounge area. They are large and spacious with wide glass doors onto the balcony, where views down the valley are sublime.

Interiors are rich with fine furnishings and wood floors, along with all mod cons. On especially hot days, the large pool area offers an easy way to enjoy the sun for the whole family, with its paddling pool and nearby games for the teens. There’s also a bar at the end which does ice cream, snacks and tasty meals.

The pool is heated in winter and there is also a gym and sauna onsite, while kids get to mess about at the playground where there’s a giant chess game and mini-golf. The main hit of this fine resort is of course the nearby Amadores Beach, a Blue Flag beach 15 minutes down the hill.

This stunning arc of sand is kept spotless and is worth making the trip to Gran Canaria for. Timeshare owners can be safe in the knowledge that it is good for bathing year-round, owing to Gran Canaria’s fine weather. The beach is backed by lots of eateries and tourist shops, with decent prices for the island.

It’s a bit of walk up to Sol Amadores, set back as it is within the Barranco de Amadores, though courtesy buses also run the route through the day. You can also check out Amadores Garden or the nearby adjoining resort town of Puerto Rico for its excellent shopping.

The rest of Gran Canaria is equally stunning, a volcanic island as with the sister islands of the Canaries chain. Hire a car and take in the coast proper or go inland and hike the rugged national parks of this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The cultured island capital, Las Palmas is in the north, with Gran Canaria Airport a 30-minute drive from Sol Amadores.
