Inspired by the story of Phileas Fogg and Michael Palin’s classic BBC series of the same name, we’ve set off to see if it possible to go around the world on a timeshare!
Over the next 12 weeks we’ll be using 80,000 eXpectations points to book a series of holidays with RCI to take us full-circle round-the-world.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with timeshare points, our own eXpectations Holidays product has a video that should help answer many commonly asked questions. However, to put the feat into perspective, 80,000 points is approximately how many points would be required to book a 3 bedroom apartment in Spain during July or August.
To manage this we need to stretch out the points as much as possible by booking smaller accommodation sizes and making use of late booking discounts.
What’s the point? Well we’re always looking for creative ideas as to how to help highlight the flexibility that points can provide and we’re hoping this will provide our eXpectations members with some inspirational ideas for the next holiday whilst helping to better explain the concept of timeshare points and the flexibility they can provide in a more engaging way.
Alas, whilst I would have quite enjoyed 12 weeks away from the office I could quite persuade the powers that it was entirely necessary. So, in much the same way that Jules Vern mixed fact and fiction in the original novel, so shall we! We shall be using real-time availability from RCI to make any bookings whilst the journey itself will be a virtual one that we hope to bring to life with regular updates and by using facebook and twitter.
The first leg of the journey has just started in Italy’s Umbria region. We have used just 5,750 points to book 7 nights at an eco resort called La Casella.
